50 STORIES 50 YEARS: CANTERBURY CHORAL SOCIETY

Canterbury Choral society’s mission to provide the highest quality choral music to “the broadest and most diverse audience possible” begins with students who participate in the Canterbury Youth Choruses (CYC).
CYC serves young people from over 100 school districts in central Oklahoma with curriculum designed to enhance singing skills and overall musical literacy.
The support of the Oklahoma Arts Council has extended CYC’s geographic reach into Moore and provided 20 program scholarships as of fall 2014.
Such scholarships allow students of more diverse socio-economic backgrounds to participate in CYC’s musical learning opportunities.
CYC participants also have the opportunity to sing in the Side-by-Side program with Canterbury’s Adult Chorus – one of the largest volunteer choruses in the United States.
Cuts to the Oklahoma Arts Council’s budget would hinder Canterbury’s ability to provide scholarships for young singers and thus to pursue their goal of a broad-based, diverse choral program for central Oklahoma.
This story celebrates 50 years of the Oklahoma Arts Council and how the state’s investments have positive ripple effects on communities across Oklahoma. See other stories or follow this link for more information.
