Oklahomans for the Arts envisions a state where every citizen can experience and benefit from arts and culture. Oklahomans for the Arts, a statewide nonprofit organization, represents a network of more than 5,000 supporters. Together, these artists, executives, volunteers and community leaders agree that the arts improve our state.

BACKGROUND: Oklahoma’s more than 720 nonprofit arts & cultural organizations provide access to arts and support communities in every corner of the state with an estimated $872.8M impact on the economy. Also, the arts industry plays an important role in building and sustaining economic vibrancy. The arts industry supports more than 29,000 jobs statewide. The Oklahoma Arts Council is the backbone agency for this industry. The Oklahoma Arts Council is the state agency that leads, cultivates and supports a thriving arts environment, which is essential to quality of life, education and economic vitality for all Oklahomans. In the past year, the Arts Council provided grants to organizations and schools, developed infrastructure though leadership programs and the statewide arts conference, and preserved our unique cultural assets.
BACKGROUND: In the more than 50 years since its inception, the Oklahoma Arts Council has developed an enviable national reputation for the effectiveness of its funding, objectivity of its grant programs and the efficiency of its staff. As an independent agency, the Arts Council receives federal matching funds and regional services because of the state’s appropriation.
BACKGROUND: Research shows arts education improves students’ self-confidence, communication and problem-solving skills and overall academic performance. Learning in the music, dance, visual art and drama helps every individual develop the critical thinking, collaborative, and creative skills necessary for the ever-changing workplace. Arts education in Oklahoma includes certified arts teachers in the classroom, community-based arts programs and arts integration.
